Patriotic Holidays

Ordinary Time

Today is the American Empire Independance Day. Some 230 years later, now who's the big bad world power?

Huzzah!

Oh, apparently, Canada had a "Canada Day" this week, which is kind of cute. I'm surprised someone hadn't told me. Chris, as my token Canadian friend, this is like, your job.

In honor of the Canadians, I direct you to War Plan Red. Guys, don't think this couldn't happen tomorrow.

Okay, so here are some different Christian responses to American Patriotism in honor of Independance Day. You get the idea.

Jingoism (I would link if I read those people - any suggestions?)
Moderate, Reasoned response
A wee bit of cynicism
Raging anabaptist fury (see the whole series here)
"Sorry, what day is it?"

Have a ball.

Perhaps you have more Canadian readers than you realized.

How many times do I have to tell you - I don't really believe in Nationalism! It's nonsensical...you don't have a choice where you were born! I can understand promoting the positive values and aspects of your culture, but even that can be dangerous if taken to the extreme...

Nationalism causes everything from genocides to the following petty feud:

I see your War Plan Red and raise you The Burning of Washington (all right, so we weren't officialy a country then but the last time there was a war across our borders, our side burnt down the White House! Ha!)

I think Canada's got plenty to share with the rest of the world (capitol building fires not included), however I honestly do believe that every nation has something to learn from every other nation...that's right, i'm so pomo it hurts!

*ahem* that's 'po-mo' (as in postmodern) NOT 'porno' as it may appear. just a note of clarification....

I'm relatively unfamiliar with Canada. The wife is from near there and she doesn't appear to have been affected adversely. I'm gonna go with:

Canada: It's gotta be better than Ohio.

You mean they don't call it Fireworks Day? Why the f**k not? That's pretty much all that happens, and the sides of the road get littered with little freaking baby american flags.

Stephen! I know I have several - I was teasing, and with Chris (my previous housemate!) and Mike (a previous baptist!) particularly in mind. I'm sorry if I seemed to be seriously mocking your heritage. :-(

Oh, Chris, you're so moderate. I did I tell you that an English guy kept me in a headlock until I apologized for Vietnam?

Josh, how did I forget that you married a Yankee?

Katey, the important thing is that nobody went to the ER...

Kyle, you should never apologize for Vietnam. Just blame it on the French, who we were just trying to bail out for the third time in the 20th century.

We have more than repaid their little contribution to American independence. Merci, Lafayette!

Here's a little story for you:

I was sitting in the JCR last night watching the Portugal v France game and one of the visiting students (from Tennessee) came in and asked who was playing. When we told her, IMMEDIATELY she said "Go Portugal, I hate France!" to which I immediately replied (this is perhaps after a few beers) "Oh please, how much do you ACTUALLY know about France anyway??"

The room went quiet and she looked at me and said "Well, not that much actually."

I decided it was best to end it at that.

Chris: Do you wanna come to Idaho and say that a few people?

As much as I'd like to, I prefer my internal organs to remain bullet-free :P

I know the feeling...

I'm not even kidding.

That's alright, I'm sure the suspense can't last too much longer...
