Community is hard.
Loving people is hard. It’s hard to open up to people and risk being hurt. It’s hard not to work for self-sufficiency. Hard to open up and need the love, affection and affirmation of the people around us.
There is risk, there is pain, and it is hard.
But that is no excuse for bowing out and running away, because that is how redemption works.
The liturgy of the Church will guide us deeper into that life tonight, as we receive the imposition of ashes, and remember that apart from Christ, we are lost and dead.
We will learn to love the sting of truth more than our own comfort.
I will listen more than I talk. I will sit quietly with my friends, invoke the Presence, and wait for the salvation of our god.
Come, Holy Spirit. Teach us to live, by teaching us how to die.
